“This is James Stewart in Rear Window,” says director Wes Anderson, when recalling his first impression of Hamilton, and his apartment, in Uncropped, the documentary he executive-produces. Rear Window – Hitchcock’s classic about an adventurous newspaper photographer taken off the job by a broken leg, abandoned to spy on his neighbours – is a formative film for the cinephile cameraman. The former Village Voice and New York Observer photographer James Hamilton lives in a small Manhattan apartment on University Place that also doubles as his studio.

It also happened to one of the smallest and was the least expensive of the Case Study Houses to build. CSH 20(B) also demonstrates quite well that the relationship between the architects and the home owners need not be a clash of personal ‘wants’ versus design ‘solutions’. The result is a home that, like so many well-designed modern homes of the era, is a masterstroke of architecture that offers an almost seamless blend of interior and exterior spaces with an open plan that allows for natural light from all sides as well as the vaulted ceiling.
Project Management
The portion of the property slated to host a park has remained a brown site even though the apartment building has opened. That’s because the developer had to make improvements to the site and surrounding infrastructure before turning it over to the Park District, officials have said. The former Edgewater Hospital complex was an eyesore for nearly two decades before being converted into upscale apartments in 2020. As part of that project, MCZ Development pledged to give a portion of the hospital site to the Park District to build a park. The perimeter will be enclosed by a metal fence and landscaped with trees, officials said at the meeting. It will feature a grass lawn circled by a peanut-shaped, concrete walking path.

He also designed Continental Airlines’ 1968 jet stream logo and United Airlines’ 1974 tulip logo, which became some of the most recognized airline industry logos of the era. Saul Bass (1920 – 1996) was instrumental in create a new American Minimalism in modern graphic design. With a final design now selected, work is slated to begin in the summer and be completed in the fall, Park District officials said at a community meeting Monday hosted by Ald. He's got great ideas, listens to what we want and the constraints we have, quick, respectful of budget and inspired. Neighbors at Monday’s meeting asked about adding a rain garden, a feature that was included in previous schematics.
“We went through all these discussions before, and the consensus was this not being a dog park,” said Scott Fink, president of the West Edgewater Area Residents. The design was selected from two final schematics that the Park District and contractor Hitchcock Design Group unveiled to neighbors in spring 2021. It was chosen instead of a design that featured a more angular walking path. Known as Park 599, the public space will be built behind Anderson Point, the new apartment complex at 5700 N. Ashland Ave. that inhabits portions of the former Edgewater Hospital. ANDERSONVILLE — A long-in-the-works public park will break ground in Andersonville this summer with a planned opening this fall, city officials announced Monday.
Benches and ornamental lighting will line the walking path, with two meeting spaces with tables and chairs. Case Study House 20B differs is many ways from many of the other Case Study Houses with one of the primary differences is that the home is framed in wood rather than steel. Working closely with the owners – renowned graphic illustrator Saul Bass and his wife biochemist Dr. Ruth Bass – the architects were very interested in the possibilities of wood as it pertained to mass production in home construction.

It has always struck me as a little odd that there are two Case Study Houses numbered 20. Perhaps John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture magazine who spearheaded the Case Study House program (and himself lived in CSH #9), simply lost count when assigning the commissions. The first Case Study House 20(A) is the Stuart Bailey House located in the Pacific Palisades and designed by architect Richard Neutra in 1948. Designed by the architectural firm of Buff, Straub Hensman Case Study House 20(B) – the Bass House – is located in Altadena, California and was completed in 1958.
